Upper Kenai River
The old adage “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is” doesn’t hold true when describing the upper Kenai River. As I paint a picture for that first time client over the phone, I'm waiting for their response to be something like, "c'mon, for real"! But it truly is a remarkable river! Because of its high level of glacial silt the water is a beautiful turquoise color. Carving its way through the Chugach Mountains it flows into Skilak Lake some seventeen miles downstream. Throughout the stretch of river the gradient, depth and width change. There are back channels, braids, undercut banks and obstructions all creating outstanding trout habitat. Fishable numbers of trout remain all season however; your odds greatly increase through the salmon runs. There are no motors allowed on the upper river and trout are catch and release. We access the river by drift boat, which adds to the overall experience. If you only can fish one-day treat yourself to an upper Kenai River trip you won’t be disappointed.

The Russian River
A trip on the Russian river can be a trip that exceeds anyone’s expectations! It’s a short hike in trip and Sockeye salmon are abundant during the run with many rainbow trout and dolly varden taking advantage of all the food they supply the fishery with. The river is gin clear and most fishing is done by sight with good holding pockets. The upper stretch has a good gradient and is less fished. The lower section near and at the confluence of the Kenai is referred to as Alaska’s most famous combat zone fishing area. Sockeye are the prized fish for eating and pound for pound offer a battle not soon forgotten. I would highly suggest if you haven’t fished the Russian you should, it’s one of my favorites and is pretty consistent.

Crescent Creek
Fishing on Crescent lake/creek with a horseback ride in is a great opportunity! Taking horses in allows you to do a day trip and enjoy the scenery along the way. The trail is 6.5 miles long and climbs into alpine country quickly. Once above the tree line the country opens up into breathtaking vistas where it’s not uncommon to see sheep, goats and bear. Just before reaching the lake we come to Crescent Creek which holds good numbers of grayling and is a great spot for staging horses and preparing our lunch. If the lake is not too windy it offers great fishing as well. The grayling taken out of the lake are the biggest on the Kenai Peninsula. Grayling are typically not shy and many are in the range of 17 to 19 inches.
